BRH: Week 3 session......aw fuck it

Today's run = big fat FAIL.

I hurt so bad by the end of set 2 (around the 1 mile mark) that I decided to call it quits. Sadly it was a mile back home. Bentley and I did two more sets before we made it back to the driveway.

As I started running for each set everything felt good. About 1:30 into each set is when things started to hurt. I was huffing and puffing so bad by the end of my 3:00 run that my walk was practically a crawl. That 2:00 walk/crawl rest my drive and I kept pushing until we were back at my street and I couldn't do it any more. Total distance was about 2 miles.

I am currently on the sofa with my legs propped up and ice on my shins.

Ok...I know these are man shins...or the sins of a hairy woman....but the red spots are where my pain is. I'm e-mailing this photo to my PT friend in hopes that she will give me some advice...like if I should see a doctor or if I should keep icing/stretching/buy compression sleeves/buy new shoes. I would hate to by new shoes when my new ones are only 2 months old.

What do you think?

Doctor?
Suck it up and keep going?
New shoes?
Compression sleeves?

  1. Those are a lot of red spots....i really don't know what to tell you. I never had pain like that and my best advice is to get a supportive insert for your shoes. I used super feet once and it helped me when i had all that hip pain. pain is bad in my experience and that usually means resting til the pain is not more. see you have inflammation and the more you run the more inflammation you will get. you need to rest awhile for the inflammation to actually go done. (one day is usually not enough)

  4. I would try new shoes. Go to a running store that will analyze your gait. The wrong shoes can cause all the problems you are describing. Of course it could be something else but start with the shoes. Good luck.

  5. When I was in high school I had some shin splints and did toe taps a lot. Don't know if they worked but I still do them along with the alphabet with my feet, moving from the ankle to stretch/strengthen those muscles. In my opinion, issues with the lower legs is due to weak hips/glutes. If your hips aren't strong, then your lower legs take the hit.

The outside knee pain looks like IT Band.

I hope your PT friend can help give you guidance because not running, or not running pain free sucks.

  6. I agree with the new shoes - what kind do you have? If you go to a specialized running store, they'll be able to fit you with shoes to match your running style. Looks like shin splints to me, in which case--keep icing and try to run on softer ground. I used to get that terrible knee pain too and I was fixed almost immediately when I bought new shoes (GOOD $100 running shoes). Good luck!
